These new-build retail and residential complex at the Plymouth Barbican came with a brief to source and supply stone for use at an architecturally sensitive coastal location. Our challenge was to find materials that would blend sympathetically with the existing, but no longer quarried, local Devon limestone on the quayside. We sourced and specified Pietra di Billiemi, a limestone from Sicily and local to Palermo, for use as cladding and for piers and other architectural detail, and Blanco Castile, a white granite from Spain, for use as flooring.
Our involvement extended to arranging for the cladding material to be cut to size and honed in Sicily, shipped to the UK and erected on site.
